June 14th Statement

This past week, Fearless / Red River United Indivisible chapters witnessed a number of comments posted on local Fargo-Moorhead social media spreading unsourced speculation about the police somehow collaborating with our June 14th “Kick Out the Clowns” event. There is no truth to any of the rumors or speculation. Furthermore, if there was a serious, immediate danger of physical harm to people at our event, our Safety Marshals would alert the emergency response system, which includes ambulances, firefighters, or police, for assistance to protect human life.

Indivisible has no formal relationship with the local police departments, although the topic of holding meetings with police leadership, specifically about our concerns with their commitment to protecting our civil rights during our public events, has been discussed by our members at our regular meetings. And for obvious reasons: we hold public political events; we are inevitably going to interact with various public safety personnel, particularly the police. Any meetings with members of either local police departments would be akin to the meetings our chapters hold with Federal elected officials literally every month. Meeting with authorities doesn’t mean that we expect agreement with them, but our organization believes in dialog. Sending excerpts of minutes of our meetings, including comments made by various members without context, implying it is some kind of official policy statement of either of our chapters is simply misleading and untruthful.

This is a time for unity for everyone who is opposed to the fascist destruction of our democracy – leftists, liberals, moderates, centrists, and anti-fascist conservatives. It is only by all of America uniting against the fascist threat in our midst that we will prevail.

If anyone has a disagreement with what they perceive as Indivisible’s positions, they are invited to come join the conversation. Every Indivisible meeting is open to the public and transparent, and always has been.

Our next meeting is tomorrow: Sunday, June 15, 4 PM to 5:30 PM, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Moorhead, at 406 8th St S.
